The Complexity of the Ego
Presented by John Beebe
In this presentation, John Beebe will share insights he has not previously made explicit into the ways people survive the complexity of the world by putting forth a complexity of their own, the ego. John will examine how the ego can be identified in a three-dimensional way, by looking at the types and archetypes of consciousness that it has had to draw upon to become an image of self-agency with an ethical standpoint that others can experience and evaluate.
You are invited to hear John present his newest ideas about what the concept of the ego, a long-used but also much-challenged idea within depth psychology, looks like when it is seen through the lens of his eight-function, eight-archetype model of typology.
John will show us that the ego can be understood in a three-dimensional way:
When its strengths and weaknesses are identified,
When how it defends itself when exposed, and
When we see it not, as Freud and Adler and Jung did, as a single heroic complex struggling to deal with the unconscious, but rather more holistically, as a nest of complexes capable of hatching consciousness.
This latest application of John's model can help us understand not only where others' egos may be coming from, but also how our own egos, including the vulnerabilities and the shadows that others can see as well as our strengths and intentions, are presenting themselves and creating the stances we take toward life.

🟠 Program A
Self Regulation and the Ego:
Mapping Dysregulation Using Our Personality
Presented by Antonia Dodge & Joel Mark Witt
In this opening talk of BAAPT’s Ego series, Antonia Dodge and Joel Mark Witt of Personality Hacker explore the ego as a dynamic system of self-regulation rather than a fixed psychological structure.
Drawing on John Beebe’s work with Jung’s archetypes, the session reframes Jungian cognitive functions as practical regulatory channels the ego uses to restore balance and agency.
Through guided journaling, breakout discussions, and applied theory, participants will examine how dysregulation appears through overuse, avoidance, loops, and grip states—and how conscious engagement with the function map can support psychological resilience, flexibility, and self-leadership.

Examples of the Ego in Film
Presented by Carol Shumate
Join us as we discuss the ego and how development of the ego represents growth out of the persona stage, as depicted in 3 film clips of 3 different types. How do these types exemplify John's keywords for the functions in the ego position?
