About the event
Event Overview
This presentation offers a clear, practice-ready tour of the eight-function archetypal model as an extension of Jung’s original typology.
We’ll map how each function takes up an archetypal role across the ego–shadow axis and how these “eight voices” interact dynamically in lived experience.
Moving from structure to application, we’ll examine felt markers of each role, and case studies to show how compensations, projections, and the transcendent function appear in real relationships as well as in subjective minds.
The aim is integration, not memorization: a systems view of typology that supports individuation without flattening complexity.
This will be an illustrated lecture with diagrams, brief guided reflections, and Q&A; suitable for both newcomers and experienced type practitioners seeking a systems-level synthesis.

Event Takeaways
Participants will be able to:
Identify the eight archetypal roles in the model and recognize their affective “signatures” in practice.
Trace the four ego–shadow axes and describe how tension of opposites generates a new attitude (transcendent function).
Apply the model to type-specific patterns to formulate interventions that invite dialogue rather than one-sidedness.
Integrate the framework with adjacent lenses (IFS parts work; systems thinking) while noting the model’s phenomenological limits.
Presenter Bio
James Berryhill is a polymathic researcher and theorist specializing in depth psychology, neuroscience, and evolutionary biology. He integrates Jungian archetypes and cognitive functions theory with psychodynamic systems like Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Transactional Analysis (TA) to explore the structural systems dynamics of personality and consciousness.
With expertise in diverse fields from anthropology to evolutionary biology and psychology, James brings a complex systems perspective to understanding typology and its intersections with mental health and human biopsychosocial development. In addition to his diverse research interests, he is a professional musician and sound engineer, combining analytical mindset with creative insight in his work on the functional dynamics of mind.
