Psychological research has approached the question of musical appreciation by examining the distinct psychic processes through which music is perceived, felt, and understood.

Broadly speaking, three orientations can be discerned with each, resonating to different typological attitudes and functions:

1: The apprehension of musical form and structure, emphasizing pattern, proportion, and internal coherence.

This is aligned with: Extraverted Thinking (Te), Introverted Thinking (Ti), and Extraverted Sensing (Se).

2: Music as it is experienced subjectively, evoking autobiographical memory, consolidating identity, regulating affect, and contributing to individual health and wellbeing.

This is aligned with: Introverted Sensing (Si) and Introverted Feeling (Fi).

3: The listener’s sensitivity to the origins and intentionality of music making: the embodied gestures of performance, the intentions and subjectivity of musicians, the cultural-historical matrix within which music arises, and the mythological/symbolic aspects of music.

This is aligned with Introverted Intuition (Ni), Extraverted Intuition (Ne), and Extraverted Feeling (Fe).

This session combines thought-provoking explanations with experiential exercises, inviting attendees to participate in a learning experience aimed at increasing one’s typological understanding of how music mediates between psyche, body, and culture.

Program Takeaways

  • An understanding of how music affects certain functions.

  • An appreciation of how music impacts ego development as part of the individuation process.

  • Recognition of the role music plays in mental, physical, and spiritual health.
